Transform Your Backyard into a Haven: A Guide to Organizing Your Patio or Deck
Organizing your outdoor space before the summer gets into full swing can make spending time on your patio or deck more enjoyable later! Select a few (or all) of these tips and you’ll have a functional and beautiful space that you and your family will relish.
1- Declutter: Get rid of anything you no longer use, need or want. Think about toys your kids have outgrown, items that are broken and/or are worn out and anything that is not functional or able to be repaired. Be sure to remove some furniture if you can’t esaily move around. You can always store extra chairs in a shed or garage and bring them out when entertaining.
2- Clean: Sweep or use a leaf blower to remove any debris that may have collected over the winter. Then power wash your decking, walkways and fencing. For areas with mold and mildew, I have found that Wet & Forget works great! Notice stain or dirt on your outdoor cushions? This article from Homes & Gardens shares some super helpful tips to clean them.
3- Designate Activity Zones: Split up your outside space into different zones based on how you will use it. In general, most people will have a:
Lounging area with comfy seating and side tables for books or coffee during the day and perhaps a firepit or heater for the evening
Eating area with a table and chairs for dining al fresco
Kids’ space for toys, games and water tables
Food prep and grill space. Your grill should be away from the house (as the heat can melt siding) as well as from kid-friendly areas. A cart or small table for spatulas and spices is ideal.
Shade zone. If you have no trees to provide coverage, consider a free-standing umbrella or awning to help on those extra sunny days.
4- Furniture: If you are purchasing new furniture, consider functionality first. Will you want to lay out on your deck or just sit? Do you need extra side tables? Be sure to think about maintenance too. Select weather-resistant materials so they will last longer in the elements, such as Teak, wrought iron or resin wicker. PatioProductions.com clearly lays out the pluses and minus to the different types of materials available and how they rank. I also recommend investing in storage solutions and outdoor covers to protect your fabric cushions.
5- Accessorize: Consider incorporating accessories such as:
Small outdoor string lights. Standard outdoor flood lights can be harsh, so you may want to think about stringing up a set of outdoor lights for a softer glow.
Bright outdoor cushions, pillows and rugs. These subtle decor touches are perfect for creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Outdoor art. This is a great option for personalizing your space. There are lots of choices available from signs and wreaths to flags and wind chimes. Pick whatever fits your style.
Now you can look ahead to enjoying you outdoor space all summer long!
